Taking Care of Your Stewart+Browns

Pima, Jersey and Thermal Cottons

Our pima cotton is extremely light and delicate which makes it heavenly to wear but sensitive to wash. For this reason, we suggest you wash it with your delicates. Be careful not to wash pima in the same batch as garments with snaps or zippers as these can snag the fabric and leave it with small holes.

Cashmere

We encourage hand washing all cashmere merchandise. Hand washing is good for the fiber and makes it softer and more fluffy. Though you can dry clean cashmere, we do not reccomend dry cleaning as it may cause the fiber to become dry and brittle.

While many people use mild detergents to hand wash, we recommend using your very own shampoo and conditioner.

Simply fill a basin with luke warm water, gently submerge the garment and lightly swish and massage in shampoo and conditioner. Be careful not to place too much stress on the garment by pulling or wringing it, this could affect the overall shape and fit. Drain and refill the basin with clean water to rinse the soap out.

Remove the garment and be sure not to wring it, gently squish some of the water out. Lay it flat on a bath towel and roll the towel, pushing down to remove more water. You may need to use more than one towel if the first becomes soaked.

Unroll the sweater and reshape it to it's original size. Keep the sweater flat on a dry towel or drying rack and keep out of direct sunlight to protect the color.

To further protect the garment keep it folded and out of sunlight, hanging may cause the garment to "grow" over time and sunlight may fade the color. Also, keeping dried lavender with the garments will make them smell nice and deters moths.

Wool and Products Specified as "Dry Clean Only "

Some of our wool products have the specification "Dry Clean Only", and we encourage using an enviornmentally friendly dry cleaning service.

Along with the rise of eco-luxury fashion, more and more dry cleaners are developing ways to ensure clean clothes and stain removal without using the toxic chemicals associated with conventional dry cleaning, namely Perchloroethylene or as some call it, Perc.

Perc's are highly dangerous to the environment as a soil contaminate and especially harmful to dry cleaning workers. More than just a central nervous system depressant, people working closely with Percs are at high risk for a number of other health problems.

Luckily, methods have been developed to combat the use of Percs. We recommend both wet cleaning, which uses an advanced computer monitoring system and biodegradable soaps, and C02 cleaning which uses preexisting C02 to clean garments without producing any on it's own. Green Earth dry cleaning is also an alternative to conventional dry cleaning, however, we are skeptical of this system due to it's use of a silicon based D-5 solvent which, in preliminary tests has shown adverse health effects.
